full agenda

Beneficial AGI Summit - Feb. 27 & 28 2024

On the first two days of the BGI Summit, top thought leaders from around the globe will engage in comprehensive, detailed discussions of a wide range of questions regarding various approaches to AGI and their ethical, economic, psychological, political, environmental and other implications.

The focus will be on discussing issues, making conceptual progress, forming collaborations, and engaging in the practical actions aimed at catalyzing the emergence of beneficial AGI based on the ideas and connections set in motion by all involved.

Key Themes

Ethical & Practical Implications

Understanding the differences between various potential AGI architectures? (LLM-based, brain simulation based, neural-symbolic or hybrid, etc.)

Conceptualization of “Benefit”

What are the changes in standards of benefit over time (beneficial now is not the same to what was beneficial in the past, nor in the future). What kind of benefit do we want AGI to work toward?

Recursive AGI Self-Improvement

How should we think about the risks and benefits of recursive AGI self-improvement … versus the risks and benefits of AGIs that don’t self-improve?

Global Structures Impact

What is the relevance of social, political, economic, and ownership structures to AGI – both before and after the achievement of full human-level AGI.

Open Source Factors

What are the risks versus benefits of early-stage AGI technology being open source? What are the risks versus benefits of it being implemented on a decentralized infrastructure like a blockchain?

AGI Ownership & Ethics

Does who owns the initial human-level AGI and the nature of their business model make a major difference in the ultimate ethical orientation of that AGI?

Human Creators Influences

What impact do the consciousness of the human creators of AGI, and/or of the human population in general, have on the nature of the AGI systems we create? Would self-aware AGI designers and devs create ethically better AGI systems?

Virtuous Cycle

Are there ways that early-stage AGI systems could be used to help advance the level of consciousness of human beings, thus perhaps creating a virtuous cycle btw better humans and better AGIs?

AGI Development Initiative

How might one organize an AGI development initiative to as to maximize the odds of it leading to beneficial AGI?

Interests of Corps. & Nation-States

How can the drive to create beneficial AGI best be harmonized with the interests of corporations and the drive of nation-states to advance their own interests?

AGI Embody Human Ethics

To what extent can AGIs with different architectures and bodies than humans truly embody or understand human ethics

Regulatory Capture

What are the potential risks of “regulatory capture” of government AGI regulations by large corporations, similar to what has happened in the US financial and medical industries? How might these be avoided?

Pace of Gov. Regulations vs. AGI evolution

How can we best manage the mismatch between the slow pace of evolution of government regulations and industry standards, versus the fast pace of evolution of AI toward AGI?

Regulatory Capture

What are the potential risks of “regulatory capture” of government AGI regulations by large corporations, similar to what has happened in the US financial and medical industries? How might these be avoided?

Unconference - Feb. 29 - Mar. 1 2024

The Unconference is geared towards fostering in-depth, wide-ranging discussions. These sessions are participant-driven, which will allow attendees to bring forward their ideas and steer their discussions in parallel working sessions around a common theme. After the event, our goal is to spearhead practical initiatives that accelerate the development of beneficial AGI.

Key Themes

Constitution & Governance Framework

An initiative to collectively create a “Constitution and Governance Framework” to be proposed for voluntary adoption by individuals and organizations involved in open source AGI projects oriented toward participatory governance

Simulation / Gaming Environments

Creating such environments that allow the interactive exploration of various future AGI-development scenarios – e.g. via role-playing in environments created by generative AI tools and governed by complex dynamical-system simulations

Global Brain Collective

Participants around the globe contribute their brain-power and opinions to help direct the evolution of AI toward AGI, and perhaps also contribute their available data or compute resources to AI-oriented projects of their choice

Scenario Analysis Process

A number of plausible scenarios for the future of AGI and humanity are sketched, and aspects of this scenario are then fleshed out collectively by individuals with different backgrounds and orientations.

Scenario Potential 1

Open and participatory global developer networks aggressively pursue human-level AGI and get there first

Scenario Potential 2

One particular tech company gets to human-level AGI first and rolls it out in a carefully controlled way, in coordination with the government of their host nation

Scenario Potential 3

Multiple tech companies in multiple major nations get to human-level AGI basically at the same time

Scenario Potential 4

The first human-level AGI is an “LLM++”, versus a hybrid neural-symbolic-evolutionary system, versus a detailed human brain simulation …

Scenario Potential 5

Human-level AGI is rolled out in a way that massively improves human life in the developed world, but not the developing world

Scenario Potential 6

Human-level AGI is rolled out in a way that provides roughly comparable benefit across global regions and socioeconomic strata

Scenario Potential 7

AGI development is successfully throttled by global regulation, but progress in most other advanced technologies (including narrow AI systems & LLMs and pursuing corporate and military aims) continues apace
